How to Properly Clean and Maintain Your Composite Deck
Composite decks are great because they look beautiful and are low maintenance. They just need basic cleaning biannually to clear away the dirt, mud, and soil that builds up over time.
The Best Way to Clean Your Composite Deck
How can you properly clean and maintain your composite deck? First, check the weather. The more pleasant the weather, the better it is for cleaning your deck because you don’t want rain, snow, wind, or heat to cause problems.
When it’s time to clean, you can prep by removing deck furniture and covering plants, grass, and decorations that are near or under your deck. After that, sweep and hose off the debris.
Now you can create a simple cleaning solution by mixing a gallon of warm water with a ¼-cup of deck-safe liquid dish detergent like Dawn inside a bucket. Once your solution is ready, dip a long-handled or handheld brush into the soapy water and scrub your deck in the direction of the grain. After scrubbing a section of your deck, use your garden hose to wash away the dirty residue. It’s best to scrub and hose down small sections at a time because otherwise the soap might dry out and leave a stubborn residue.
If you see mold, mildew, tree sap, or rust stains, you can use products specifically designed to clean them off decks. We don’t recommend using pressure washers because you risk accidentally damaging your composite decking.
